What is Valuation?
Valuation refers to the level of liability a moving company assumes for your belongings during a move. It determines how much compensation the mover will provide in case your items are lost, damaged, or destroyed. Valuation is not insurance but rather the mover’s responsibility as outlined in their contract. Hyperion Moving Systems offers two types of valuation:
Released Value Protection (Basic Valuation)
• Cost: Included at no additional charge.
• Coverage: Minimal protection, typically $0.60 per pound per item.
• Example:
If a 40 lb TV is broken, you’d receive $24.00 (40 lbs x $0.60).
If a 100 lb Dresser is damaged beyond repair, you’d receive $60.00 (100 lbs x $0.60).
If a 200 lb Sofa is damaged beyond repair, you’d receive $120.00 (200 lbs x $0.60)
• Limitations: This does not reflect the actual value of your items and may be insufficient for high value or fragile items.
Full Value Protection (Enhanced Valuation)
• Cost: Additional charge, calculated based on the total weight of your shipment or its declared value.
• Coverage: The mover is liable for the repair, replacement, or cash value of your items, up to the declared value of the shipment.
• Example:
A 40 lb TV would be covered up to $400 (40 lbs x $10 per pound).
A 100 lb dresser would be covered up to $1,000 (100 lbs x $10 per pound).
A 200 lb Sofa would be covered up to $2,000 (200 lbs x $10 per pound)
• Notes: This better reflects the actual value of your items, and may be sufficient valuation to insure peace of mind during your move. This level of valuation is adequate for the needs of most customers.

Extraordinary Value Items (Special Valuation)
“Extraordinary Value Items” are defined as any individual items worth over $100.00 per pound OR with a market OR declared value of over $5,000.00. All Extraordinary Value Items must be declared to Hyperion Moving Systems before they are handled.
Cost: Additional costs may apply to items of extraordinary value. These costs are to be determined based on the declared value of the item and the level of risk involved in moving the item.
Note: These often include artwork, antiques, and delicate decor. Often these items require specialized protection to ensure their safe transport. Without proper protection, these valuable and often fragile items are more susceptible to damage, which is why we may insist on professional crating services to ensure they are adequately protected throughout the moving process.
Key Points About Moving Valuation:
• Legal Requirement: Moving companies are required to offer valuation options under federal regulations in many regions.
• Customer Choice: You must decide whether to accept the default Released Value Protection or opt for Full Value Protection.
• Not Insurance: Valuation is different from third-party insurance, which can offer broader coverage options.
• High-Value Items: For items of extraordinary value, you may need to list them specifically in the moving agreement to ensure coverage.
Why Does It Matter?
Valuation is crucial because accidents can happen during a move. If your belongings have significant monetary or sentimental value, you may want to invest in Full Value Protection or third-party insurance to avoid financial loss.
